Verso Energy, a French company, has announced its plans to establish a new plant for hydrogen and synthetic fuel production at the Port of Oulu in northern Finland. The company's decision to choose Oulu is based on the region's access to affordable renewable energy and biogenic carbon dioxide, as well as the presence of research expertise at the University of Oulu. Verso Energy aims to utilize renewable hydrogen production and carbon dioxide recovered from local sources for its synthetic fuel production. The Oulu region, known for being the largest producer of renewable electricity in Finland, offers a conducive environment for such projects. Furthermore, Gasgrid Finland is working on establishing a hydrogen transport infrastructure to link Oulu's hydrogen production with other parts of Finland and Europe. While the land reservation for the plant is a preliminary step, AFRY Finland has evaluated the project's likelihood of materializing as high, citing Verso Energy's well-structured business plan and funding support. The initiative is anticipated to generate a significant number of job opportunities in the Oulu region. Verso Energy's CEO, Antoine Huard, highlighted the advantages of Oulu's business ecosystem and transportation network, emphasizing the region's potential for high value-added production. The company's participation in the upcoming Northern Power event in 2025 signifies its commitment to engaging with industry leaders and policymakers to shape the future of hydrogen energy in the Nordic region.
