Zepp.solutions Chosen as Supplier for Dutch Zero-Emission River Cruise Vessel Project
Key Ideas
- Zepp.solutions will supply X150 fuel cell modules for a Dutch Government-backed project aiming to introduce hydrogen as a clean energy source for river cruises, reducing emissions in urban areas.
- The project is part of the Dutch Maritime Master Plan, targeting at least 40 zero-emission ships by 2030 and involving research institutions like MARIN and TNO.
- The fuel cells will be produced at a new factory in the Greater-Rijnmond region of the Netherlands, with a grant of €1.98m secured for its development and a capacity to eventually produce up to 1,000 systems annually.
- Insights gained from this initiative will be shared to promote wider adoption of hydrogen propulsion technology across the maritime industry.
Zepp.solutions has been selected as the hydrogen fuel cell supplier for a project backed by the Dutch Government to transform river cruises into zero-emission operations. The project, known as NERA-H2, will see Zepp.solutions providing its X150 fuel cell modules to power a retrofitted cruise vessel with an output exceeding 1MW. This initiative, largely funded by the Dutch Maritime Master Plan, aims to introduce hydrogen as a clean energy source for river cruises, with the goal of reducing emissions in urban areas where over 420 vessels operate across Europe. The project is a step towards the Master Plan's target of having at least 40 zero-emission ships by 2030. Research institutions such as MARIN and TNO are involved in the technical validation and development of propulsion technology, while the Arnhem and Nijmegen University of Applied Sciences will focus on energy storage and digitalization research. Zepp.solutions' fuel cells will be manufactured at a new factory in the Greater-Rijnmond region of the Netherlands, which received a grant of €1.98m for its development. The factory, expected to be operational next year, has the capacity to produce up to 1,000 systems annually. Insights gained from the NERA-H2 project will be shared to promote the wider adoption of hydrogen propulsion technology within the maritime industry.
