Austrian Hydrogen Valley Initiative Launches with EU Support
Key Ideas
- Three Austrian federal states receive a 20 million euro grant from the EU to kickstart the 'Hydrogen Industrial Inland Valley Austria' project.
- 578 million euros are set to be invested by 2030, focusing on the production, transport, storage, and application of green hydrogen.
- The project aims to produce around 5,500 tons of green hydrogen annually by 2028, with a significant portion allocated to energy-intensive industries like steel and cement.
- By 2030, it is projected that over 13,000 tons of hydrogen will be needed annually in Styria, Upper Austria, and Carinthia, emphasizing the importance of transitioning to sustainable hydrogen technologies.
The 'Hydrogen Industrial Inland Valley Austria' project in Austria's Styria, Upper Austria, and Carinthia has received a 20 million euro grant from the EU, with a total investment of 578 million euros planned by 2030. The initiative aims to tackle the challenges faced by industrial sites in these states by adopting sustainable and environmentally friendly practices through hydrogen technologies. The project will cover the entire value chain of green hydrogen, targeting industries, energy, and mobility sectors. Plans include the construction of new electrolysis plants to produce over 10,000 tons of hydrogen annually in the three states.
The project, led by the WIVA P&G research institute, includes 17 selected projects that will be the focus of concrete planning starting in February 2025. These projects aim to enhance the hydrogen economy in Europe and contribute to a climate-neutral future. With a goal of producing 5,500 tons of green hydrogen per year by 2028, significant progress is expected in the decarbonization of energy-intensive industries like steel and cement in the region.
The hydrogen demand in Styria, Upper Austria, and Carinthia is projected to surpass 13,000 tons by 2028, highlighting the necessity of transitioning to green hydrogen production. The initiative aligns with the 'Green Energy 2040 Master Plan' of the Styrian Industrial Association and Energie Steiermark, anticipating the need for more hydrogen than electricity in the coming years. By 2030, local production is expected to supply over 18,000 tons of green hydrogen annually to meet industrial demands. The Hydrogen Valley project is set to play a crucial role in achieving these targets and establishing Austria as a key player in the hydrogen market.
