Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) has recently announced a partnership with aerospace companies to embark on the development of a hydrogen-fueled Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) aircraft ecosystem. This collaboration involves BluJ Aerospace, the Agency for New and Renewable Energy Research and Technology (ANERT), the Government of Kerala, and Cochin International Airport (CIAL). BPCL's role in this initiative includes establishing hydrogen refueling infrastructure for VTOL aircraft in Kochi and Trivandrum through upcoming Hydrogen Refueling Stations (HRS). Additionally, the company will focus on research and development efforts to design and produce an Indigenous Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Hydrogen Fuel Cell with high power density to enable vertical lift-off, thus contributing to advancing India's hydrogen technology capabilities. This strategic agreement is closely aligned with India's ambitious target of achieving net zero emissions by 2070 and signifies a significant step forward in aviation innovation. The primary objective of the project is to revolutionize urban and regional air mobility by integrating green hydrogen-powered VTOL aircraft, which will not only enhance speed, reduce noise, and improve efficiency but also lead to a substantial reduction in carbon emissions. BPCL, known for its involvement in the exploration, production, and retailing of petroleum and related products, particularly in the marketing of petrol, diesel, and kerosene, is now expanding its horizons by venturing into the realm of sustainable aviation through this groundbreaking partnership.
