The European Commission has announced its support for the development of the Namibian green hydrogen industry through three EU-funded programs amounting to €53.9m. The funding includes up to €50m dedicated to supporting green hydrogen investment funds in Namibia and South Africa. These funds are expected to catalyze advancements in production, transportation, storage, and downstream industries related to green hydrogen. Additionally, a program called EU-Get.transform will receive €2.7m from the EU and Germany to support the Ministry of Mines and Energy in energy planning and expanding Namibia’s renewable generation capacity. The Namibia Green Hydrogen Programme has also secured €1.2m to ensure effective regulation and support mechanisms for the green hydrogen sector. European Commissioner Kadri Simson emphasized the EU's commitment to help Namibia drive its green industrialization, achieve energy security, and enhance prosperity for its citizens in alignment with the country's development plans. Furthermore, Germany recognized Hyphen Hydrogen Energy's Namibian ammonia production project as a strategic foreign project, potentially leading to benefits such as secure energy supplies, expanded trade relationships, sustainable development, and enhanced security cooperation.
