Edmonton Airport Pioneers Hydrogen-Diesel Hybrid Runway Sweepers, Leading Canada's Sustainability Drive
Key Ideas
  • Edmonton International Airport partners with Diesel Tech Industries to trial hydrogen-diesel technology on runway snow sweepers, aiming to reduce emissions and boost sustainability.
  • The project targets hard-to-abate Tier 3 diesel-powered vehicles, with the conversion expected to lower emissions, improve data tracking, and advance hydrogen adoption in aviation operations.
  • The initiative, supported by Alberta Innovates, highlights the practical benefits of hydrogen technology and accelerates the transition towards market-ready solutions in the hydrogen economy.
  • By setting a precedent for sustainable airport operations, the collaboration between YEG and DTI aims to drive further adoption of hydrogen technology in commercial transport and contribute to Alberta's clean energy workforce development.
Edmonton International Airport (YEG) is making strides in sustainability by becoming the first airport in Canada to trial hydrogen-diesel hybrid technology on heavy-duty runway snow sweepers. Collaborating with Diesel Tech Industries (DTI), the airport aims to reduce emissions and improve sustainability. The project involves retrofitting Tier 3 diesel-powered vehicles with the Guardian Hydrogen Diesel System to operate using hydrogen as a supplementary fuel. This initiative not only targets emission reduction but also focuses on improving data tracking for fleet management and regulatory compliance. Although retrofitting these vehicles poses challenges, the potential benefits are substantial in advancing hydrogen adoption within aviation ground operations. The partnership, supported by Alberta Innovates, showcases the practical advantages of hydrogen technology and its role in decarbonization. The successful conversion process, set to commence in spring 2025, is expected to span around a year. It aligns with YEG's carbon reduction objectives and contributes to Alberta's broader hydrogen economy goals. By leading by example in sustainable airport operations, YEG and DTI aim to promote hydrogen technology adoption in commercial transport and support the growth of a skilled clean energy workforce in Alberta.
