NHPC Ltd, India's largest hydropower company, has announced its plan to invest Rs 5,500 crore in setting up a 1,000 megawatt solar power project in Bihar. The chairman and managing director, Raj Kumar Chaudhary, revealed this investment during the Bihar Business Connect 2024 investor summit. The project aims to produce green hydrogen by using electricity from a smaller solar plant. This green hydrogen will then be utilized to power passenger buses, promoting the use of clean energy sources. NHPC already has substantial operational hydropower plants and is working on expanding its capacity. The company's focus on green hydrogen aligns with the government's initiatives to promote sustainable energy sources. NHPC is also involved in similar projects in states like Gujarat. The government's support for green hydrogen as a fuel further underscores the importance of transitioning to cleaner and more environmentally friendly energy sources. NHPC plans to initially operate one bus on green hydrogen and may increase the number as more solar power is generated.
