Poland's Ambitious Hydrogen Initiative with BGK: Leading the Way to Decarbonization
Key Ideas
  • Poland's Ministry of Climate and Environment partners with the National Economy Bank to support hydrogen investments under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan with a substantial budget of 640 million euros.
  • The initiative aims to advance hydrogen technologies, achieve a renewable and low-emission hydrogen production capacity of at least 315 MW, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly.
  • Planned investments will aid in decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors such as industry and transport, helping Poland meet RED III targets for renewable hydrogen use and renewable fuels.
  • Public aid will be granted as subsidies of up to 2 million euros per 1 MW of capacity for RFNBO hydrogen production installations, with a competitive application process starting by year-end.
Poland's Ministry of Climate and Environment has collaborated with the National Economy Bank (BGK) to support hydrogen investments under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, allocating a substantial budget of 640 million euros. The agreement focuses on advancing hydrogen technologies, with a specific emphasis on production, storage, and transport. The goal of the third phase of this initiative is to achieve a renewable and low-emission hydrogen production capacity of at least 315 MW to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and replace high-emission energy sources. By doing so, greenhouse gas emissions, including carbon dioxide, will be significantly diminished. These investments will have a pivotal role in decarbonizing challenging sectors like industry and transport and will help Poland meet the revised Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) targets. The targets include a minimum percentage of renewable hydrogen use for the industrial sector by 2030 and an increasing percentage by 2035. Additionally, the transport sector is expected to achieve specific shares of advanced biofuels and renewable fuels of non-biological origin by 2030. Public aid in the form of subsidies will be granted for RFNBO hydrogen production installations, with up to 2 million euros allocated per 1 MW of capacity. Eligible installations must have a minimum capacity of 20 MW. A competitive application process is scheduled to commence by the end of the year, with agreements expected to be finalized by June 2025.
