Renewable Hydrogen Boosts Neerim North Mobile Network Resilience
Key Ideas
  • A new renewable hydrogen back-up system will provide 72 hours of power to enhance mobile coverage during outages in Neerim North.
  • The Victorian Government has invested $1.1 million in the Telstra Hydrogen Fuel Cell Pilot project, part of a larger initiative to improve resilience during extreme weather.
  • Multiple companies, including Telstra, Boundary Power, and Energys Australia, are involved in hydrogen pilot projects to explore decarbonizing energy supply.
  • Renewable hydrogen is seen as a critical tool in strengthening energy resilience and supporting communities during emergencies, according to government officials and project leaders.
The Neerim North mobile network in Victoria, Australia, is gearing up to enhance its resilience through a new renewable hydrogen back-up system. This system, consisting of 10kW generators, is designed to offer up to 72 hours of back-up power to maintain mobile coverage during storms and power outages. A $1.1 million investment from the Victorian Government has facilitated the Telstra Hydrogen Fuel Cell Pilot project, which aims to increase community support during emergencies in areas prone to extreme weather. The project involves installing five hydrogen fuel cells in various storm-affected communities like Coldstream, Kinglake, Christmas Hills, and Chum Creek. This initiative is part of the Renewable Hydrogen Commercialisation Pathways Fund worth $6.6 million. Alongside Telstra, companies such as Volgren Australia, Viva Energy, and Boundary Power are conducting hydrogen pilots and trials to explore the potential of renewable hydrogen in energy transition. Energys Australia, the manufacturer of the Telstra Hydrogen Fuel Cells, has successfully commissioned Australia's first solar-renewable hydrogen standalone power system. The project aligns with efforts to decarbonize energy supply and enhance energy resilience. Minister Lily D'Ambrosio highlighted the critical role of renewable hydrogen in the energy transition, emphasizing its contribution to powering communities reliably and affordably. Telstra's Executive Vicki Romanovski expressed the importance of renewable hydrogen in maintaining network connectivity during extreme weather events. The pilot aims to assess the viability of hydrogen as an alternative energy source for ensuring continuous communication services. The project signifies a broader commitment to exploring sustainable solutions for energy needs and promoting resilience in critical infrastructure.
