Swedish ferry operator Gotlandsbolaget has awarded Austal Australasia a contract valued between AUD 265 and AUD 275 million for the design and construction of a 130-meter combined cycle, hydrogen-ready vehicle passenger ferry as part of the Horizon X program. The ferry, to be the largest vessel ever constructed by Austal, will feature a unique propulsion system with gas and steam turbines, aiming to redefine commercial ferry capabilities and lead the transition to decarbonization. With a capacity of up to 1,500 passengers, cargo, and 400 vehicles, the ferry will be constructed using green aluminum and advanced technology to reduce emissions. The project, scheduled to complete in mid-2028, marks a key step in the partners' strategy for climate-neutral operations. The innovative propulsion system has gained approval in principle for its hydrogen readiness, in line with the commitment to sustainability and environmentally responsible practices. The collaboration between Gotlandsbolaget and Austal signifies a milestone in the journey towards sustainable ferry operations, utilizing cutting-edge green technology and hydrogen-ready systems.
