GIZ Initiative Promotes Green Hydrogen Projects in Latin America
Key Ideas
- German development agency GIZ is offering financial and technical support to green hydrogen projects in Brazil, Chile, and Colombia through the H2Uppp program.
- The initiative aims to promote green hydrogen in emerging and developing countries by encouraging innovative public-private partnership ideas supporting hydrogen projects.
- Companies have until March 14 to submit proposals, with the requirement that private companies contribute at least 50% of the project costs.
- The program targets countries beyond Latin America, such as Algeria, Egypt, India, and South Africa, to foster the growth of the global green hydrogen market.
The German development agency GIZ has launched the International Hydrogen Ramp-up Program (H2Uppp) to support green hydrogen projects in Brazil, Chile, and Colombia. The initiative, commissioned by Germany's economic affairs and climate action ministry (BMWK), aims to accelerate investment in the green hydrogen industry in emerging and developing countries. GIZ invites companies to submit innovative public-private partnership (PPP) ideas that promote green hydrogen and its derivatives. The program offers two partnership models: a cooperation agreement supporting measures up to 2 million euros without direct financial transfers, or a service agreement providing up to 200,000 euros for specific services. Projects must align with sustainability goals, focusing on CO2 reduction and long-term market development. Eligible companies, including German, European, and local firms, must demonstrate scalability, economic viability, and alignment with national energy transition strategies. The initiative targets countries beyond Latin America, such as Algeria, Egypt, India, Morocco, Namibia, and Thailand, to foster the global market for green hydrogen. By promoting green hydrogen projects worldwide, GIZ aims to achieve economies of scale and cost reductions to enhance the competitiveness of green hydrogen against fossil fuels.
