Chile is making significant strides in its energy sector with 86 energy projects currently under environmental review, involving associated transmission line components. The regions of Valparaíso, Atacama, and Tarapacá are key locations for these projects, accounting for a substantial percentage of the total investment of US$54.1bn. Notably, green hydrogen initiatives play a significant role in influencing this figure, representing about half of the total investment. Solar PV and onshore wind are the dominant non-conventional renewable energy sources, with 71 projects, along with a growing emphasis on energy storage solutions. The expansion of transmission infrastructure is a crucial aspect of Chile's energy strategy, aiming to support the increased integration of renewables, address curtailment challenges, and enhance supply to industrial zones. With plans for 1,377km of transmission lines, primarily in the northern regions, the country is laying the groundwork for a more robust energy grid. The government's energy transition law, recently enacted, is set to facilitate the advancement of energy projects, with a focus on sustainability and efficiency. This legislative framework is driving investments in 34 transmission projects, including a substantial US$1.15bn HVDC system, as part of a broader plan with a total investment of US$2.26bn. Overall, Chile's energy sector is witnessing a shift towards renewable sources and improved infrastructure, setting the stage for a more sustainable and resilient energy landscape.
