Key Ideas
  • China plans to accelerate the development and application of low-carbon hydrogen in the industrial sector as part of its national decarbonisation push.
  • The plan includes increasing the use of hydrogen in production processes, promoting research on green methanol and green ammonia, and deploying hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.
  • By 2027, the industrial sector in China aims to make significant progress in the production and use of low-carbon hydrogen and derivative fuels, according to the unveiled plan.
  • Analysts are optimistic about the potential of hydrogen in the industrial sector, citing high demand from industries like shipping and aviation.
China has announced plans to provide more support for low-carbon hydrogen in the industrial sector following a national decarbonisation initiative. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the National Development and Reform Commission, and the National Energy Administration revealed a joint plan to accelerate the application of low-carbon hydrogen. The plan involves encouraging refiners and chemical companies to increase their use of hydrogen to reduce emissions and develop green methanol and green ammonia. These zero-carbon fuels, derived from hydrogen, can be utilized in power generation and transport. Additionally, the plan promotes the deployment of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and the development of hydrogen-powered ships, aircraft, and locomotives. By 2027, the industrial sector aims to actively progress in the production and utilization of low-carbon hydrogen and its derivative fuels. Analysts like Wu Jiaxiong from BOCI Securities are positive about the potential of hydrogen in the industrial sector, highlighting the high demand from sectors like shipping and aviation.
