TotalEnergies and Masdar to Develop Green Hydrogen-to-SAF Project in Abu Dhabi
Key Ideas
- TotalEnergies and Masdar collaboratively plan to establish a green hydrogen-to-methanol-to-SAF project in Abu Dhabi, focusing on CO2 capture and utilization.
- The project aims to produce green methanol and SAF through renewable electrolysis, supporting Abu Dhabi's goals for aviation decarbonisation.
- Masdar has been actively forming strategic partnerships, including with Boeing, to advance the SAF sector globally and in the UAE, aligning with national targets for locally produced SAF.
- The initiative also supports Abu Dhabi's Low Carbon Hydrogen Policy and the UAE National Hydrogen Strategy, emphasizing a shift towards sustainable energy sources.
TotalEnergies and Masdar have announced their collaboration to develop a commercial project in Abu Dhabi that focuses on converting green hydrogen to methanol and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This initiative aims to capture and utilize CO2 from industrial sources to produce green methanol and SAF, with the green hydrogen being generated through renewable electrolysis. The project is a significant step towards aviation decarbonisation, which is a key focus for the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company. In line with this, a successful test flight converting methanol to SAF was conducted in December (2023) to showcase the potential of this technology. Masdar, over the past three years, has been actively forming partnerships to boost the SAF sector, with a recent collaboration with Boeing to develop SAF in the UAE and globally. The UAE has set voluntary targets for providing 1% of fuel to national airlines at UAE airports using locally produced SAF by 2031, along with plans to establish a national regulatory framework to support SAF operations. This project aligns with Abu Dhabi's Low Carbon Hydrogen Policy, promoting the use of hydrogen as a future energy source, and complements the UAE National Hydrogen Strategy, emphasizing sustainable energy practices.
