₹13-crore Green Hydrogen Project to Power Buses in Kandla and Gandhidham
Key Ideas
  • A 1 MW green hydrogen demonstration plant is being constructed at Kandla port in Gujarat to supply hydrogen for buses in Gandhidham town.
  • The project, costing around ₹13 crore, is expected to be operational by July 2025 and will also produce electricity for port and jetty areas.
  • In addition to this project, there are plans for large-scale green hydrogen production at Kandla port, with multiple corporate houses setting up units.
  • Kandla is one of the ports in India chosen for the development of green hydrogen hubs, with the aim of exporting hydrogen derivatives and fueling vessels.
A ₹13-crore green hydrogen demonstration project is currently underway at Kandla port in Gujarat, India. The project involves the construction of a 1 MW plant that will produce green hydrogen to fuel hydrogen-powered buses in Gandhidham town, located nearby. The Chairman of Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) has confirmed that the project is expected to be operational by the end of July 2025. The green hydrogen generated will not only power buses but will also be used to produce electricity for lighting up port and jetty areas. This initiative is part of a larger push towards sustainable practices, with plans to set up more green hydrogen projects at Kandla port. Several corporate houses have already been allocated land to establish units for producing green hydrogen, with an annual target of 5.5 million tonnes. The ultimate goal is to export green hydrogen derivatives like methanol and green ammonia while also using them to fuel ships calling at the port. Alongside Kandla, other ports like Tuticorin and Paradip have been selected for similar hydrogen hub developments, marking a significant step towards green energy adoption in the country.
