The Hydrogen Electric Research Team at the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI) has developed a groundbreaking integrated system capable of simultaneously producing liquid hydrogen and evaluating the performance of safety valves. This achievement, unveiled in conjunction with 'Hydrogen Day,' marked on November 2, is poised to revolutionize the hydrogen industry by addressing crucial safety and efficiency concerns in hydrogen transportation. Liquid hydrogen, produced through cooling hydrogen gas to -253°C, offers improved safety during storage and transportation due to its reduced volume and enhanced stability. While liquid hydrogen presents numerous advantages, including increased safety and larger transport volumes, challenges persist in maintaining optimal cryogenic conditions and managing internal pressure in storage tanks. Safety valves are vital components that regulate pressure by releasing excess hydrogen gas when necessary. The absence of a comprehensive infrastructure for liquid hydrogen production and distribution has hindered manufacturers from verifying safety valve performance adequately. To mitigate this issue, KERI's innovative device streamlines the testing process by enabling the simultaneous production of liquid hydrogen and evaluation of safety valves, ensuring product quality and safety in the market. KERI, renowned for its expertise in liquid hydrogen technology, has expanded its capabilities with this new system, which targets safety valve evaluations for 3-ton liquid hydrogen tank trailers. The portable design of the device facilitates easy installation and operation, with rigorous safety testing conducted to guarantee its reliability and effectiveness. Director Rock-kil Ko emphasized the significance of this development in enhancing the competitiveness of South Korea's hydrogen industry by providing a safe and efficient solution for liquid hydrogen production and safety evaluation. KERI plans to enhance the device to handle larger hydrogen volumes and pressures, collaborating with industry partners to meet safety standards and facilitate technology transfers. Supported by government funding, this project aims to advance the hydrogen economy in South Korea, with potential applications across various industries. KERI's commitment to innovation and safety in hydrogen technology underscores the institute's leadership in driving sustainable solutions for the future.
