Air Liquide Invests €1bn in Hydrogen Projects in the Netherlands for TotalEnergies
Key Ideas
  • Air Liquide plans to build two large-scale electrolyser projects in the Netherlands to supply TotalEnergies with clean hydrogen, totaling 53,000 tonnes of low-carbon and renewable hydrogen per year.
  • The first project, ELYgator in Maasvlakte, Rotterdam, is a 200MW electrolyser expected to be operational by the end of 2027 and will supply TotalEnergies' industrial platform and Air Liquide's customers through a long-term contract.
  • A second 250MW project in Zeeland, a joint venture between Air Liquide and TotalEnergies, will produce up to 30,000 tonnes of hydrogen annually from 2029, supporting TotalEnergies' Zeeland refinery.
  • Both projects will utilize PEM electrolysers manufactured by Air Liquide and Siemens Energy's joint venture, contributing to the decarbonization of industrial assets and expanding low-carbon hydrogen production in Europe.
Air Liquide has announced plans to invest €1bn in building two large-scale electrolyser projects in the Netherlands to supply TotalEnergies with clean hydrogen. These projects are expected to produce up to 53,000 tonnes of low-carbon and renewable hydrogen per year from 450MW of electrolysis, powered by TotalEnergies' renewable assets. The first project, ELYgator, will consist of a 200MW electrolyser in Maasvlakte, Rotterdam, set to become operational by the end of 2027. This project will supply TotalEnergies' industrial platform and Air Liquide's Dutch and Belgian customers through an existing hydrogen pipeline network. Funding for this plant has been secured from the EU's innovation fund and the Dutch important projects of common European interest programme. Air Liquide and TotalEnergies will also establish a 50/50 joint venture for a second project in Zeeland, aiming to produce 30,000 tonnes of hydrogen annually from 2029 to support TotalEnergies' Zeeland refinery. Both projects will use PEM electrolysers from the Air Liquide and Siemens Energy joint venture, contributing to the decarbonization of industrial assets. Air Liquide's commitment to renewable and low-carbon hydrogen production aligns with TotalEnergies' efforts to decarbonize, with Air Liquide already in agreements to supply green hydrogen from its 200MW Normand'Hy plant. These investments signify a step towards expanding low-carbon hydrogen production in Europe and supporting the growth of renewable energy sources.
