The Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (ARCH2) has sealed an agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy to receive up to $925 million in federal funds, facilitating the establishment of a clean hydrogen hub in Appalachia. This landmark agreement is expected to catalyze extensive private sector investment, spurring the growth of a robust hydrogen economy in the region and generating numerous well-paid jobs. ARCH2's involvement in the DOE's H2Hubs Program signifies a strategic move towards creating clean hydrogen clusters that will play a pivotal role in a national clean hydrogen network. With an initial $30 million allocated for the first phase of the project, scheduled to commence in July 2024, further funding will be unlocked as ARCH2 achieves key milestones set by the DOE. The project's overarching goal is to produce clean hydrogen, addressing the decarbonization needs of challenging sectors like manufacturing and transportation, while simultaneously fostering economic growth and social equity in Appalachia. To ensure the inclusive benefits of the initiative, 40% of the program's advantages will be directed towards disadvantaged communities that have historically faced underinvestment and environmental burdens.
