Australia's First Green Hydrogen Project Receives Record Funding
Key Ideas
  • Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners secures A$814 million for the Murchison Green project, becoming the first recipient of the Hydrogen Headstart program.
  • The project in Western Australia will feature a 600MW/1200MWh battery storage system, solar and wind farms, desalination plant, and large-scale production of renewable hydrogen and ammonia.
  • ARENA's funding aims to support the project's development, contribute to Australia's clean energy goals, and boost economic prosperity through decarbonizing industries.
  • The initiative is expected to create local jobs, enhance skills development, and benefit communities, aligning with Australia's vision of becoming a leader in green hydrogen production.
Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) is set to receive a substantial A$814 million investment from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) for the Murchison Green project in Australia, marking a significant milestone in the country's green energy sector. This initiative, supported by the Hydrogen Headstart program, will establish Australia's premier green hydrogen facility. The project, developed through CIP's energy transition fund, will comprise a 600MW/1200MWh battery storage system, solar and wind farms, as well as facilities for hydrogen and ammonia production. The site, located near Kalbarri in Western Australia, will harness renewable sources to generate 1.2GW of solar power and 1.7GW of offshore wind energy. Notably, the project plans to implement up to 1.5GW of electrolysis for large-scale hydrogen and ammonia production. With a focus on sustainability, the facility aims to export 3,600 tonnes of Haber-Bosch ammonia daily. ARENA's financial backing is contingent on meeting operational requirements over a decade, emphasizing the importance of commercial viability. Darren Millar, CEO of ARENA, highlighted the project's role in propelling Australia towards a cleaner energy future by supporting endeavors in challenging sectors like ammonia, iron, and alumina. Shohan Seneviratne, CEO of Murchison Green Hydrogen, expressed gratitude for the funding, underscoring the shared commitment to fostering a robust green hydrogen industry in Australia. The project's objectives extend beyond financial gains, aiming to create employment opportunities, enhance local skills, and engage with communities, including First Nations, to ensure sustainable development and prosperity.
