AVL RACETECH, the motorsport division of AVL, unveiled a groundbreaking hydrogen-powered internal combustion engine prototype in 2022. This 2-liter turbocharged engine utilizes advanced water injection technology, achieving 150 kW per liter output and performance on par with high-performance racing engines. The engine design focuses on achieving power through a slight lean-burn approach, stoichiometric combustion, and water injection to enhance pressure and cool the combustion chamber. AVL RACETECH successfully tested the prototype, reaching 301.7 kW of power and 500 Nm of torque, demonstrating exceptional performance and reliability. This innovative technology positions hydrogen engines as a key player in the future of the automobile industry, offering a cleaner alternative with zero tailpipe emissions and the ability to leverage existing infrastructure.
