Balfour Beatty has reached a milestone in its decarbonisation journey by launching the M77 Hydrogen project in Scotland, aiming to establish the country's first construction hydrogen hub. The project, developed in collaboration with ULEMCo, Logan Energy, and PlusZero, is supported by internal funding and £243,000 from the Scottish Government. By retrofitting heavy vehicles with a hybrid hydrogen system, Balfour Beatty aims to demonstrate the viability of hydrogen technology for reducing carbon emissions. Initial road tests have shown promising results, with up to 26% carbon reduction achieved. The project includes setting up green hydrogen supply, onsite storage, and refuelling infrastructure. Challenges like retrofit costs and limited hydrogen availability are being addressed, with plans to enhance the hydrogen supply landscape in Scotland by 2026. Collaboration with partners like Aberdeen City Council and First Bus Aberdeen has been crucial in sharing insights and navigating the evolving hydrogen technology market. Balfour Beatty plans to continue testing and optimizing the hydrogen technology, sharing lessons learned with the industry, and supporting its supply chain in transitioning to hydrogen. By advocating for competitive green hydrogen fuel rates and engaging with stakeholders, Balfour Beatty aims to lead the way in promoting economic sustainability in the transition to hydrogen technology within the construction industry.
