Forestal del Atlántico, a Spanish shipping and chemicals company, has partnered with Germany's BASF to accelerate the production of e-methanol (eMeOH) through carbon capture solutions. BASF will provide its OASE blue gas technology to remove carbon dioxide from flue gases in Forestal's Triskelion project in Galicia, Spain. The captured CO2 will be converted into e-methanol using renewable hydrogen for applications in shipping and chemicals industries. The collaboration aims to assist in the front end engineering design and technical feasibility assessment for the project. The partnership signifies a step towards reducing global emissions and promoting sustainable fuel production. Forestal's Triskelion project, supported by a €49 million grant from the EU Emissions Trading System's Innovation Fund, plans to begin operations in January 2028 with an initial capacity to produce 156 metric tons of e-methanol daily. The project, a strategic interest for the Xunta de Galicia, is expected to contribute to decarbonization efforts with the potential to scale production in subsequent phases. Forestal previously selected Topsoe as an engineering partner and solutions provider for the project. The final investment decision is scheduled for June 2025, highlighting the commitment to sustainable energy practices and emissions reduction.
