BMW Group Acquires Hydrogen Fuel Cell Trucks for Sustainable Freight Transport
Key Ideas
  • BMW Group has acquired two hydrogen fuel cell trucks for a pilot project in Germany under the European H2Haul program.
  • The project includes the establishment of hydrogen fuelling stations in Leipzig and Hormersdorf to support the trucks' operations.
  • This initiative aims to test the viability of hydrogen fuel technology in the logistics sector, contributing to decarbonisation efforts in heavy traffic.
  • The project, funded by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, will pave the way for the commercialisation of fuel cell trucks in Europe, aligning with BMW's climate goals.
The BMW Group has acquired two zero-emission fuel cell trucks as part of a pilot project under its European H2Haul program. These trucks will operate between Leipzig, Landsberg, and Nuremberg in Germany to trial the practicality of hydrogen fuel technology. Additionally, two advanced hydrogen refuelling stations are being constructed in Leipzig and Hormersdorf to enable rapid refuelling, essential for continuous use in freight transport. The project, in collaboration with Iveco, DHL, and TEAL Mobility, aims to test hydrogen trucks under realistic conditions and assess their role in decarbonising heavy traffic. This initiative, funded by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, will see a total of 16 trucks operating across Europe. BMW's participation reflects its commitment to reducing logistics emissions and achieving zero-emission transport. The findings from this project will contribute to the market maturity of hydrogen fuel cell trucks and support their integration into the road freight sector, complementing the use of E-trucks for long-distance routes.
