BP and Iberdrola España have jointly approved the construction of a groundbreaking 25 MW green hydrogen project at bp's refinery in Castellón, Spain. This project, operated through Castellón Green Hydrogen S.L., a joint venture between both companies, is expected to be operational in the second half of 2026. Supported by 15 million euros from Spanish and EU funding programs, the initiative aims to produce 2,800 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, reducing CO2 emissions by 23,000 tonnes per year. The electrolyser, powered by Iberdrola's renewable electricity, is set to replace part of the grey hydrogen currently used at the refinery. Furthermore, the project is expected to create 500 new jobs during its construction phase and could later supply green hydrogen to industries in the Valencia region, aiding in the decarbonisation of sectors like ceramics and heavy transport. The collaboration between BP and Iberdrola España signifies a strategic alliance focused on promoting the green hydrogen economy in Spain and positioning the Valencian Community as a technological leader in the European green hydrogen industry. The project aligns with both companies' commitment to long-term decarbonisation and the development of sustainable energy solutions.
