BP Secures Funding for Large-Scale Green Hydrogen Plant in Germany
Key Ideas
  • BP secured funding in Germany to proceed with a 100 MW electrolyser project for green hydrogen production.
  • The project aims to produce 10K-11K tons/year of green hydrogen for use at BP's Lingen refinery in Germany and by local industries.
  • Initially planned with Orsted, the project has been expanded to 100 MW after the Danish partner withdrew.
  • BP is also considering the use of green hydrogen at its Castellon refinery in Spain.
BP has announced the securing of funding in Germany to push forward with the development of its first fully owned and operated large-scale green hydrogen plant. The funding was provided by the Lower Saxony regional government and Germany's Economy Ministry as part of the EU's IPCEI Hy2Infra initiative. The project involves the installation of a 100 MW electrolyser that is capable of producing an average of 10K-11K tons per year of green hydrogen. BP plans to utilize this green hydrogen at its Lingen refinery in Germany and also supply it to local industries. Originally a collaboration with Orsted, the project has now evolved to be solely operated by BP after Orsted pulled out. Additionally, BP is exploring the potential use of green hydrogen at its Castellon refinery in Spain, showing its commitment to sustainable and renewable energy sources.
