Cadent's HyNet North West Hydrogen Pipeline: Decarbonizing the North West
Key Ideas
  • Cadent's project involves a 100km underground hydrogen pipeline in the North West, distributing low carbon hydrogen to industrial offtakers, supporting decarbonization and green jobs.
  • The pipeline will connect to the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex near Ellesmere Port and branch off to industrial offtakers via smaller pipelines.
  • The project aims to support the UK's goal of achieving a zero carbon power system by 2030, creating new green jobs, and securing existing skilled employment.
  • The consultation, the third and likely final stage before applying for a Development Consent Order, invites feedback on the updated design and environmental impact.
Cadent is undertaking a public consultation on its plans for a new underground hydrogen pipeline across the North West of the United Kingdom. The project involves the construction, operation, and maintenance of approximately 100km of pipeline to distribute low carbon hydrogen produced primarily by EET Hydrogen at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex near Ellesmere Port to industrial offtakers in the region. The pipeline will also have smaller branches to connect specific industrial offtakers. While the pipeline will be underground, there will be above ground installations required along the route. The project is aimed at supporting the HyNet North West low carbon hydrogen cluster and achieving the UK's target of a zero carbon power system by 2030 and reaching Net Zero emissions. The HyNet North West Hydrogen Pipeline is considered a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project, and after this consultation, Cadent plans to submit an application for a Development Consent Order to the Planning Inspectorate and Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero. The project is expected to play a crucial role in decarbonizing the North West, creating green jobs, and supporting the UK's climate goals. Cadent encourages local communities, authorities, and industry partners to participate in the consultation to provide feedback on the detailed plans before the final application for consent.
