Can Gio District Welcomes Proposals for Offshore Wind Power Projects
Key Ideas
  • Two investors propose offshore wind power projects in Can Gio, including a 1,000MW cluster and a 6,000MW plant with a focus on green hydrogen production.
  • Over 14,000 rooftop solar projects in Ho Chi Minh City contribute to a total capacity of 355MWp, predominantly for on-site consumption.
  • The proposed offshore wind power projects are still in the early stages of research and evaluation.
  • The potential production of green hydrogen in the Can Gio area indicates a shift towards sustainable energy practices in the region.
Deputy Director Nguyen Thi Kim Ngoc of the Department of Industry and Trade in Ho Chi Minh City announced that Can Gio outlying district has received proposals for offshore wind power projects. Two investors are considering projects in the coastal areas of Ly Nhon, Long Hoa, and Can Thanh town. The first project aims to create a 1,000MW cluster of offshore wind power plants, while the second project focuses on a 6,000MW plant, with a portion allocated for green hydrogen production post-2030. These initiatives are currently in the preliminary research and evaluation phase. Additionally, the city boasts over 14,000 rooftop solar projects, with a cumulative capacity of around 355MWp, primarily used for self-consumption. The potential incorporation of green hydrogen production in the Can Gio offshore wind power project signals a positive shift towards sustainable energy practices in the region.
