Canada Backs HTEC's Hydrogen Liquefier Facility in British Columbia
Key Ideas
  • The Canadian Government is investing $49m in HTEC's hydrogen liquefier facility project in North Vancouver.
  • HTEC's H2 Gateway programme aims to develop hydrogen refuelling stations, production facilities, and a fleet of hydrogen heavy-duty trucks.
  • President and CEO of HTEC, Colin Armstrong, sees the investment as a validation of Canada's move towards a low-carbon hydrogen ecosystem.
  • Though challenging, the project will convert industrial by-product hydrogen into clean fuel for heavy-duty transportation, contributing to sustainability.
The Canadian Government has announced a $49m investment in HTEC to support the development of a 15-tonne per day hydrogen liquefier facility in North Vancouver, British Columbia. This investment is part of the Strategic Innovation Fund and is a significant step towards building a sustainable hydrogen ecosystem in Canada. HTEC's H2 Gateway programme not only focuses on the liquefaction of hydrogen but also aims to establish hydrogen refuelling stations, production facilities, and a fleet of 100 hydrogen heavy-duty fuel cell electric trucks. Colin Armstrong, the President and CEO of HTEC, expressed that this government backing validates their vision for a low-carbon hydrogen ecosystem and will accelerate the transformation of the heavy-duty transportation sector in Canada. Despite the challenges associated with liquefying hydrogen, such as energy consumption and safety risks, the project will utilize industrial by-product hydrogen to produce clean fuel for heavy-duty vehicles, contributing to environmental sustainability. This initiative aligns with global efforts to introduce liquid hydrogen-powered trucks, as seen in the Mercedes-Benz GenH2 trucks trials launched by Ineos Inovyn and Daimler Truck.
