Caterpillar Inc., in collaboration with Microsoft and Ballard Power Systems, received recognition from the US Department of Energy's Hydrogen Program for their innovative backup power solution using hydrogen fuel cell technology at a Microsoft data center. The partnership was awarded the top honor in the Systems Development and Integration category at the 2024 Annual Merit Review Awards. The project showcased the viability of large-format hydrogen fuel cells to provide reliable backup power for data centers, with a successful demonstration at Microsoft's data center in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Caterpillar led the project, focusing on system integration, power electronics, and microgrid controls, while Microsoft hosted the demonstration and Ballard supplied the advanced hydrogen fuel cell module. The project, supported by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the DOE's Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office, demonstrated the capabilities of fuel cell systems to power multi-megawatt data centers, ensuring uninterrupted power supply to meet stringent uptime requirements. Caterpillar's commitment to hydrogen-fuel power technologies extends beyond this project, with initiatives like generator sets running on hydrogen-natural gas blends and a collaboration with District Energy St. Paul for a hydrogen-fueled combined heat and power system.
