Chile's Albatros Granted Maritime Infrastructure Rights for Green Hydrogen Project in Magallanes
Key Ideas
- The armed forces department of Chile granted Sociedad de Inversiones Albatros the right to build maritime logistics infrastructure in Magallanes for a green hydrogen project.
- Albatros, a member of H2 Chile, will construct a multi-buoy terminal, pipelines, and a manifold station to facilitate the dispatch of ammonia to vessels, with a 9,916m3/y seawater desalination capacity.
- The Llaquedona Green Hydrogen initiative, involving 800MW of wind-powered electrolyzers to produce ammonia for exportation, is a partnership between Albatros, Danish renewables investor CIP, and Alfanar.
- Challenges for green hydrogen projects in Chile include securing environmental licenses, cost reduction, and finding offtakers, with multiple hydrogen derivative projects, like HNH Energy and Cabo Negro/Faro del Sur, under environmental review in Magallanes.
In Chile, the armed forces department of the defense ministry has granted permission to Sociedad de Inversiones Albatros, a member of the local hydrogen association H2 Chile, to build and utilize maritime logistics infrastructure in the southern Magallanes region. This infrastructure will support a green hydrogen project known as Llaquedona Green Hydrogen, which aims to produce ammonia for exportation using wind-powered 800MW electrolyzers. The concession agreement allows Albatros to construct a multi-buoy terminal, pipelines, and a manifold station in Clarencia bay. The pipelines will have diameters of 24 inches for seawater desalination and 18 inches for dispatching ammonia to vessels. With an estimated construction period of 29 months, the infrastructure will cater to vessels of 200m length and 50,000 gross register tonnage. Albatros is collaborating with CIP and Alfanar on this initiative. Challenges in the green hydrogen sector in Chile include obtaining environmental licenses, reducing costs, and finding buyers. Projects like HNH Energy and Cabo Negro/Faro del Sur are also going through environmental reviews in Magallanes as part of the country's effort to expand its green hydrogen projects.
