Costa Rica is embracing a groundbreaking project, the “Green Hydrogen for a Decarbonized Economy,” with an investment of €25 million to propel the development of green hydrogen within its economy. This initiative aims to offer an alternative clean energy solution for sectors difficult to electrify, such as cement and heavy-duty transportation. The project includes both financial and technical assistance components. Financial aid will help kickstart green hydrogen projects, overcoming high upfront costs through loans and subsidies. On the other hand, technical support will focus on enhancing human and institutional capacities, adjusting regulatory frameworks, and creating strategies for positive social impacts like job creation. The project is aligned with the country's National Green Hydrogen Strategy, facilitated by German Cooperation GIZ, aiming to establish hydrogen hubs nationwide. These hubs will not only produce green hydrogen but also facilitate its use in various sectors like transportation and industry. The initiative, recognized at COP26, signifies a pivotal step towards sustainable innovation in Costa Rica, with the goal of equipping future generations with tools to combat climate change.
