EET and SSE Collaborate on 40 MW Gowy Green Hydrogen Project in Northwest England
Key Ideas
  • EET and SSE are partnering to build a 40 MW green hydrogen project in northwest England at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire.
  • The Gowy Green Hydrogen project aims to deliver hydrogen to industrial offtakers in the region to support their decarbonization efforts, potentially operational by 2028.
  • The UK's focus on low-carbon hydrogen aligns with a target to achieve 10 GW by 2030, crucial for enabling industries to decarbonize and fostering a clean power system.
  • SSE is actively involved in various hydrogen projects, including green and blue hydrogen production facilities, storage, and power generation, to contribute to achieving net zero goals.
Essar Energy Transition (EET) has joined forces with UK gas-fired power generator SSE to establish a 40 MW green hydrogen project in northwest England. The initiative, known as the Gowy Green Hydrogen project, is being developed at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire. The project, named after the River Gowy and adjacent Gowy Meadows Nature Reserve, is set to provide hydrogen to industrial consumers in the area to aid in their decarbonization processes and help preserve and expand jobs locally. Expected to commence operations by 2028, the project is currently undergoing feasibility studies and site investigations. A planning application is slated for 2025, with a final investment decision pending. The UK's emphasis on low-carbon hydrogen, with a target of achieving 10 GW by 2030, is seen as vital in transitioning to a cleaner power system and facilitating the decarbonization of challenging industries. Joe Seifert, CEO of EET Hydrogen, expressed enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing its importance in the UK's low-carbon hydrogen landscape. SSE, through its Director of Business Development, highlighted the significance of scaling up green hydrogen production to address industry decarbonization and energy transition challenges. SSE's involvement in a range of hydrogen projects underscores its commitment to contributing to net zero objectives through diverse hydrogen-related ventures.
