EET and SSE Collaborate on 40 MW Green Hydrogen Project in Northwest England
Key Ideas
  • Essar Energy Transition (EET) and SSE are partnering to build a 40 MW green hydrogen project at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port, UK.
  • The Gowy Green Hydrogen project aims to deliver hydrogen to industrial offtakers in the region, supporting decarbonisation efforts and job growth.
  • The UK's strong focus on low-carbon hydrogen aligns with a target of 10 GW production by 2030, essential for clean power systems and decarbonising industries.
  • SSE's commitment spans the hydrogen value chain, including green and blue hydrogen production, storage, and power generation in line with net zero goals.
Essar Energy Transition (EET) and UK gas-fired power generator SSE are collaborating on a 40 MW green hydrogen project in northwest England. The project, named Gowy Green Hydrogen, situated at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, is part of efforts to support industrial decarbonisation. The initiative, inspired by the nearby River Gowy and Gowy Meadows Nature Reserve, aims to provide hydrogen to industrial consumers in the region, facilitating their transition to cleaner operations and contributing to job retention and growth. Anticipated to be operational by 2028, the project is currently undergoing feasibility studies and initial development works. This partnership reflects the UK's emphasis on low-carbon hydrogen, with a target of achieving 10 GW production by 2030 to enable cleaner power systems and assist hard-to-abate sectors in reducing emissions. Joe Seifert, CEO of EET Hydrogen, expressed enthusiasm about Gowy Green's addition to their portfolio, highlighting the collaboration with SSE as pivotal in advancing decarbonisation efforts. SSE is actively involved in various hydrogen projects, ranging from production to power generation, aligning with the transition to net zero emissions. Hannah Bronwin, SSE Thermal's Director of Business Development, emphasized the significance of scaling up green hydrogen production to address industry decarbonisation challenges and enhance sustainable energy solutions.
