Empowering Brazil's Bioeconomy through Green Hydrogen and Synthetic Fuels
Key Ideas
  • Eletrobras and Suzano are collaborating to study the development of green hydrogen and e-methanol, leveraging biogenic CO2.
  • The partnership aims to explore the technical and economic viability of producing sustainable fuels and synthetic fuel production units.
  • The initiative aligns with Brazil's commitment to sustainable development and could boost the country's competitiveness in the global bioeconomy.
Brazilian energy company Eletrobras and pulp producer Suzano have joined forces in a partnership focused on advancing the development of green hydrogen and synthetic fuels. The collaboration will investigate the potential of utilizing natural biogenic CO2 from Suzano's production process to create sustainable fuels, particularly e-methanol. This research also includes evaluating the feasibility of establishing a unit for producing synthetic fuels. The Vice President of Trading and Energy Solutions at Eletrobras highlighted the importance of this cooperation in meeting the increasing demand for low-carbon hydrogen and its derivatives worldwide. Additionally, the Energy Director at Suzano emphasized the potential for e-methanol, derived from renewable sources like biogenic CO2 and low-carbon hydrogen, to replace fossil fuels in maritime transportation. The partnership, which has been in the works since late 2023, underscores Eletrobras' dedication to sustainable development and innovation. Notably, Eletrobras has also signed agreements with other entities for the production of renewable hydrogen in Brazil. This initiative is poised to enhance Brazil's global standing in the bioeconomy sector and play a significant role in the country's energy transition and decarbonization efforts.
