Empowering Defense Forces: Group Surya's Solar-Hydrogen Microgrid in Ladakh
Key Ideas
  • Group Surya secures a significant Rs 102 crore contract for a Solar-Hydrogen BESS-based microgrid in Ladakh, partnering with NTPC and the Indian Army.
  • The microgrid aims to provide 200 kW of continuous power in extreme conditions, replacing diesel generators and reducing carbon emissions by 1,500 tonnes annually.
  • The initiative not only enhances energy security and independence but also pays tribute to the bravery and sacrifices of soldiers in remote terrains.
  • This project signifies a pivotal move towards sustainability and decarbonisation in India's defense and renewable energy sectors, showcasing leadership in the sustainable energy domain.
Group Surya, in collaboration with NTPC, the Indian Army, and NTPC REL, has secured a Rs 102 crore contract for a Solar-Hydrogen BESS-based microgrid in Chushul, Ladakh. The project aims to provide a reliable and clean energy source to defense forces stationed in harsh and remote areas. Inaugurated virtually by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, this initiative is a significant step towards enhancing energy security and sustainability. The microgrid, valued at Rs 102 crore, is designed to generate 200 kW of continuous power year-round, even in extreme temperatures as low as -30°C at an altitude of 4,400 meters above sea level. By leveraging Ladakh's abundant solar energy, the project intends to replace traditional diesel generators, thereby reducing carbon emissions by 1,500 tonnes per year. This shift not only minimizes fuel dependency in critical defense zones but also aligns with India's efforts to decarbonize its energy infrastructure. The location of the project near the historic site of the 1962 Battle of Rezang La adds symbolic value, honoring the sacrifices of soldiers. Surya International's Managing Director emphasized the tribute to soldiers' bravery through this initiative. Group Surya's commitment extends to maintaining the microgrid to ensure uninterrupted energy support to India's soldiers in remote locations, reaffirming its leadership in sustainable energy endeavors, particularly in the hydrogen-focused initiatives.
