EQT Corporation's Clean Hydrogen and Low Carbon Aviation Fuel Project in Appalachian Region
Key Ideas
  • EQT Corporation advances its plans to produce clean hydrogen and low carbon aviation fuel from Appalachian natural gas with Phase 1 planning initiated through a cooperative agreement with ARCH2 and the U.S. DOE.
  • The agreement unlocks $30 million in initial funding for Phase 1, part of a potential $925 million designated by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law for the Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs Program, indicating significant investment in clean energy initiatives.
  • Phase 1 activities will involve planning, siting, permitting, community engagement, and analysis to ensure viability of the Hub and projects, with focus on converting natural gas into hydrogen-rich syngas for various applications including fuel cell vehicles and liquid fuels.
  • EQT aims to construct a clean hydrogen production facility, demonstrating a commitment to technological and environmental innovation in the energy sector, with the project location yet to be determined.
EQT Corporation has announced its strategic plans to produce clean hydrogen and low carbon aviation fuel (LCAF) from Appalachian natural gas, with the project advancing into Phase 1 planning. This progression follows the execution of a cooperative agreement between the Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (ARCH2) and the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED). The agreement has unlocked $30 million in initial funding for ARCH2 projects in Phase 1, with the potential for a total of $925 million to be distributed in future phases as per the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. This law establishes an investment of up to $7 billion for the Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs Program, highlighting a significant commitment to clean energy initiatives. Phase 1 will focus on activities such as planning, siting, permitting, community engagement, and analysis to ensure the technological and financial viability of the Hub and its projects. EQT plans to construct a clean hydrogen production facility that will convert natural gas into hydrogen-rich syngas through autothermal reforming. The syngas will then be further processed into LCAF and other liquid fuels. Additionally, hydrogen will be extracted and purified from the syngas for use in fuel cell vehicles or blending into gas distribution lines. The project location is still being considered, indicating careful deliberation in selecting the most suitable site for this innovative project.
