EU Backs Green Hydrogen Project in Barbados for Energy Transition
Key Ideas
  • The EU supports the Renewstable® Barbados (RSB) project, a green hydrogen power plant by HDF Energy, to aid Barbados' energy transition to 100% renewable energy by 2030.
  • The project integrates solar energy and green hydrogen storage for continuous electricity supply, reducing the island's reliance on imported fossil fuels.
  • International institutions like the European Investment Bank, IFC, IDB Invest, and GCF support the venture, enhancing its viability and potential for regional expansion.
  • HDF Energy envisions the project as a catalyst for the Caribbean's sustainable development, extending low-carbon technology to industrial and maritime sectors.
The European Union has shown its support for the Renewstable® Barbados (RSB) project, a green hydrogen power plant located at Harrow Plantation in Barbados. The initiative, developed by HDF Energy, is a significant step towards the island's energy transition goal of achieving 100% renewable energy consumption by 2030. The project focuses on integrating large-scale solar energy production with a green hydrogen storage system to ensure stable and reliable electricity supply round the clock. This move is aimed at reducing Barbados' dependence on imported fossil fuels by replacing 13 MW of fossil-fuel-based production. The involvement of the European Investment Bank, along with other international financial institutions like the IFC, IDB Invest, and the GCF, contributes to the project's viability and sets a precedent for similar ventures in the region. The project launch event, attended by Ursula von der Leyen, emphasized the significance of local renewable energy production for the Caribbean's energy security. HDF Energy, through its regional Vice-President, sees the RSB project as a pivotal step towards promoting sustainable and bankable energy solutions in the Caribbean. They are optimistic about extending this low-carbon technology beyond Barbados to benefit the industrial and maritime sectors of the region.
