EU Funds €51m for Hydrogen Transport Projects in Baltic Sea Region
Key Ideas
- The European Commission has allocated €51 million to Gasgrid and partners for three hydrogen transport projects in the Baltic Sea region to support decarbonisation and EU's energy targets.
- Projects include the Nordic Hydrogen Route, Baltic Sea Hydrogen Collector, and Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Corridor, aiming to establish a hydrogen infrastructure across multiple countries.
- The funding is expected to bring investments and job opportunities to Finland, with gas flowing between Finland and Sweden along the Nordic Hydrogen Route by the early 2030s.
- Gasgrid's projects have been recognized as Projects of Common Interest, indicating strategic importance for the European hydrogen economy and alignment with EU climate objectives.
The European Commission has granted €51 million to Gasgrid and its partners for studies on three hydrogen transport projects in the Baltic Sea region. The projects include the Nordic Hydrogen Route (NHR), the Baltic Sea Hydrogen Collector (BHC), and the Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Corridor (NBHC). The NHR project aims to establish a 1,000-kilometer pipeline between Finland and Sweden, while the BHC project focuses on an undersea hydrogen pipeline connecting Finland, Sweden, and Central Europe. The NBHC project seeks to build a hydrogen infrastructure from Finland to Germany through Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland. This funding is part of the EU's efforts to achieve around 10 percent of its energy needs from renewable hydrogen by 2050.
The investment is expected to support decarbonisation, meet EU climate targets, and create an integrated cross-border hydrogen market. Gasgrid's Senior Vice President for Hydrogen Development, Sara Kärki, highlighted the significance of the projects for Finland and the Baltic Sea Region, predicting that they will bring investments and new job opportunities. Last year, Gasgrid's projects were designated as Projects of Common Interest, emphasizing their strategic importance for the European hydrogen economy. The approval of funding by the EU's Connecting Europe Facility committee further underscores the support for these hydrogen initiatives. The gas flow along the NHR route between Finland and Sweden is projected to commence in the early 2030s, demonstrating progress towards establishing a sustainable hydrogen infrastructure in the region.
