EU Invests €422 Million in Alternative Fuel Infrastructure for Clean Transport
Key Ideas
  • The European Commission is allocating €422 million to 39 alternative fuel infrastructure projects to support the transition to cleaner transport.
  • Selected projects will focus on electric recharging stations, hydrogen refueling stations, onshore power installations in ports, and infrastructure for shipping fuels like ammonia and methanol.
  • The funding will support the deployment of approximately 2,500 light-duty vehicle recharging points, 2,400 heavy-duty electric recharging points, 35 hydrogen refueling stations, as well as electrification projects in airports and ports.
  • Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, highlighted that the projects will add nearly 5,000 new charging points, contributing to a cleaner environment and encouraging the adoption of zero-emission vehicles.
The European Commission has announced a significant investment of €422 million in 39 alternative fuel infrastructure projects to facilitate the transition to cleaner transport. The projects, supported by the EU's Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility, aim to enhance the availability of electric recharging stations, hydrogen refueling stations, and onshore power installations in ports, while also focusing on infrastructure for shipping fuels like ammonia and methanol. These investments align with the EU's regulation for the deployment of alternative fuels infrastructure, which targets the increase of electric vehicle recharging and hydrogen refueling stations across Europe's key transport networks. The selected projects will result in the deployment of around 2,500 light-duty vehicle recharging points, 2,400 heavy-duty electric recharging points, and 35 hydrogen refueling stations for cars, trucks, and buses. Additionally, the funding will support projects for the electrification of ground handling services in airports, greening of ports, and the establishment of ammonia and methanol bunkering facilities. Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas emphasized the significance of these projects in accelerating the deployment of critical recharging and refueling infrastructure, ultimately encouraging citizens to opt for zero-emission vehicles and contributing to a cleaner environment.
