The European Commission has launched an innovative partnership focusing on photovoltaics, among three new partnerships aimed at supporting the transition to renewable energy as part of the Green Deal and REPowerEU plan. This initiative targets scaling up European solar PV manufacturing capacity, enhancing the value chain resilience, and reducing reliance on fossil fuels through collaboration across the PV value chain. With plans for private partners to invest up to €240 million each from 2025 to 2030, the partnership aims to drive progress in solar energy innovation. The Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security, and Democracy emphasized the importance of fostering public-private collaborations in emerging sectors to drive Europe's innovation and scale-up capabilities while reducing reliance on imported technologies. By signing MoUs with partners, the Commission is set to kickstart this photovoltaics partnership and two others outlined in the Horizon Europe strategic plan. The partnerships are designed to impact the energy sector positively, ensuring a more efficient, secure, and competitive renewable and decarbonized energy supply in Europe. Through this collaboration, the Commission aims to address challenges and drive innovation activities towards achieving sustainable development goals. The partnership on advanced materials is also highlighted for its goal of accelerating the design, development, and industrial uptake of safe and sustainable materials for the circular economy, particularly in the energy sector for renewable energy generation, energy storage, and enhanced efficiency. Overall, the European Commission's approach to partnerships is seen as instrumental in implementing the Horizon research agenda and addressing key challenges while contributing to digital and green transitions, resilience, and sustainability goals.
