Finland's Gasgrid and the Government of Åland have entered a partnership to explore the development of a hydrogen network in Åland. The collaboration aims to plan the infrastructure for hydrogen production and consumption, with a focus on defining locations and a preliminary timetable for the hydrogen economy in Åland. Relevant stakeholders will be involved in assessing development needs and economic conditions to establish a roadmap for implementing the hydrogen infrastructure. The Åland government intends to finance its part of the project using funds from the EU's REPower instrument. Both Gasgrid and the Åland government see hydrogen production as a significant opportunity to complement offshore wind power and create new business prospects in Åland, leading to notable societal benefits. Gasgrid is also actively involved in advancing hydrogen transmission infrastructure in the Baltic Sea region. Recently, Gasgrid awarded a contract to StreamTec Solutions for owner's engineering services in projects like the Baltic Sea Hydrogen Collector and the Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Corridor. These projects aim to establish offshore hydrogen pipelines connecting various countries to produce clean hydrogen and develop a hydrogen infrastructure across multiple countries by 2030. The partnership signifies a positive step towards a sustainable and integrated energy market in the Baltic Sea region, embracing the potential of hydrogen as a key element in the renewable energy landscape.
