Fortescue has initiated works on its Green Metal Project at the Green Energy Hub in the Christmas Creek area of Western Australia's Pilbara region, marking a significant step in establishing a green metal supply chain. The US$50 million project is set to produce more than 1,500 tonnes of green iron metal annually, leveraging the green hydrogen generated from Fortescue's extensive hydrogen facility. By incorporating an electric smelting furnace, the project aims to create high purity green metal suitable for various steel plants worldwide. Dr. Andrew Forrest AO, Fortescue's Executive Chairman, emphasized the importance of innovation and collaboration in transitioning towards environmentally sustainable mining practices. The company's green hydrogen plant, capable of producing 530 kilograms of hydrogen daily, showcases Fortescue's commitment to decarbonization. Dino Otranto, Fortescue Metals' CEO, highlighted the versatility of the hydrogen plant, demonstrating its potential to power mining equipment and fuel cell electric vehicles. The involvement of the WA Government, particularly through the Renewable Hydrogen Fund, underscores the collective effort to promote green energy solutions. Roger Cook, the WA Premier, emphasized the pivotal role of hydrogen in advancing clean energy initiatives, reducing emissions, and fostering green iron production in the region. Fortescue's Green Energy Hub not only focuses on hydrogen but also includes prototypes for zero-emission decarbonization, battery electric haul trucks, and fast chargers, showcasing a holistic approach to sustainability and innovation within the mining industry.
