Chilean developer FreePower Group, led by CEO Juan Guillermo Walker, is making significant strides in the green ammonia sector in Chile. The company is currently working on the Punta Patache project in the Tarapacá region, which aims to produce 350,000 tons of green ammonia annually by utilizing 1.3GW of solar capacity. This initiative strategically located near copper mines' exporting ports is set to facilitate the production and transport of hydrogen and ammonia. FreePower Group's focus on green ammonia projects aligns with the global trend towards sustainable energy solutions. Apart from Punta Patache, FreePower is also progressing on two other ammonia projects in the Magallanes region. With approximately 70 projects announced in Chile targeting both domestic and export markets, there is a growing interest in green ammonia and synthetic fuels production. These projects require not only environmental licenses but also maritime concessions for components like desalination plants, export terminals, and subsea pipelines. Furthermore, other companies like HIF Chile, MAE, Austria Energy, and AES Andes are also investing in green ammonia projects in Chile, highlighting the country's potential as a key player in the global ammonia market. The industry's major challenges include reducing production costs, securing offtakers, and overcoming regulatory and logistical hurdles. Despite these challenges, the development of the green hydrogen industry in Chile is moving forward, with a focus on driving sustainable energy practices and technology innovation.
