A consortium of German companies and research institutions known as PoWer, based in Stuttgart, has recently been formed to explore the potential of hydrogen engine powertrain technologies for off-highway vehicles used in construction and agriculture. Members include the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Liebherr, Deutz, and others. Supported by a substantial €5.1 million investment from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, with TÜV Rheinland's assistance, the project aims to leverage the efficiency, durability, and low emissions of hydrogen engines for these specific applications. Mahle has been appointed to oversee the project. The focus will be on developing vehicle concept studies, addressing off-road utilization challenges, creating exhaust gas aftertreatment solutions, and ensuring compliance with future emissions regulations for non-road mobile machinery. The project also emphasizes the impact of hydrogen on materials, wear, and friction properties, while incorporating technological advancements like electrification and thermal management. Mahle's involvement highlights its commitment to sustainable solutions and diverse technological expertise in the automotive industry.
