Greek Collaboration Explores Hydrogen Transport Through High-Pressure Offshore Pipelines
Key Ideas
  • Corinth Pipeworks and IGI Poseidon in Greece partner to test hydrogen transportation through high-pressure offshore pipelines using carbon steel linepipes.
  • The collaboration aims to ensure safe and efficient hydrogen transport under high-pressure conditions by assessing the material's mechanical properties in a 100% hydrogen environment.
  • The first results of the testing campaign are expected to be presented in 2025, with an emphasis on advancing capabilities in delivering value with responsibility towards energy transition and low carbon fuels.
  • Corinth Pipeworks also recently upgraded its production facilities to address the increasing demand for steel pipes in hydrogen projects, offshore natural gas, and carbon capture and storage initiatives.
Corinth Pipeworks, a steel pipe segment of Cenergy Holdings in Greece, has partnered with IGI Poseidon to evaluate the transportation of hydrogen through high-pressure offshore pipelines. The collaboration focuses on testing carbon steel linepipes currently used for natural gas transport in a 100% hydrogen environment under high pressure. Various tests like slow strain rate tensile test, fracture toughness, and fatigue crack grow rate are being carried out to assess the steel material's hydrogen readiness for offshore applications. The first results of this testing campaign are expected to be shared in 2025. The partnership aims to advance engineering and material understanding for safe hydrogen transport and address the complexities of hydrogen infrastructure with confidence and innovation. Konstantinos Xifaras, Chairman of IGI Poseidon, highlighted the collaboration's role in setting the stage for a new era in energy transportation with a focus on sustainability. Ilias Bekiros, General Manager at Corinth Pipeworks, emphasized the company's commitment to contributing to the energy transition and low carbon fuels. Additionally, Corinth Pipeworks recently enhanced its production facilities to meet the rising demand for steel pipes in hydrogen projects, offshore natural gas, and carbon capture and storage. The initiative showcases a positive sentiment towards hydrogen as a viable energy carrier and indicates a proactive approach towards sustainable energy solutions.
