Hamburg's Green Hydrogen Hub at Former Coal-fired Power Plant
Key Ideas
  • Hamburg's Green Hydrogen Hub commissions Siemens Energy to install a 100-megawatt electrolyser at the site of the former Moorburg coal-fired power plant.
  • The hydrogen project, scheduled to start construction in 2025, is a major step in decarbonizing ports, industry, logistics, and aviation in Hamburg.
  • The electrolyser, based on proton exchange membrane technology, will produce around 10,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, contributing to the European hydrogen sector's growth.
  • The project, supported by funding from Germany's Ministry for Economics, marks a significant advancement in the city's green hydrogen initiatives, with plans to attract companies from various industries.
The Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub (HGHH) has announced plans to construct a 100-megawatt electrolyser on the former Moorburg coal-fired power plant site in Hamburg. Siemens Energy has been tasked with the installation, with construction set to begin in 2025. This initiative follows Germany's Ministry for Economics approving over EUR 250 million in funding for important hydrogen projects, including this electrolyser order. The electrolyser, using proton exchange membrane technology, is expected to be operational by 2027, producing approximately 10,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. The hydrogen will be supplied through the HH-WIN network and a lorry-loading station, with negotiations underway to attract companies from various sectors to the hydrogen site. This project is considered a vital step in decarbonizing Hamburg's ports, industry, logistics, and aviation. The City of Hamburg is actively promoting the hydrogen sector's growth in collaboration with industry, science, and politics. Over 60 projects, initiatives, start-ups, and collaborations focusing on green hydrogen are already in progress in the city. The overall goal is to support the European hydrogen sector's expansion and facilitate the energy transition towards more sustainable practices.
