Hitachi Energy has joined the U.S. Department of Energy’s 'H2@Scale in Texas and Beyond' initiative, collaborating with GTI Energy, Frontier Energy, The University of Texas Austin, and other stakeholders. The project focuses on investigating hydrogen generation efficiency from renewable resources, including activities such as a vehicle refueling station and fleet of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles at the University of Texas JJ Pickle Research Center in Austin, Texas. Hitachi Energy's expertise in integrating utility scale renewable energy sources with power grids plays a key role in the project. The initiative aims to expand the role of hydrogen in decarbonizing Texas, particularly in hard-to-abate sectors such as metals, fertilizers, chemicals, and oil and gas. Hitachi Energy, a global leader in power grids, is committed to driving innovation and sustainability in the clean energy landscape through its involvement in the full hydrogen value chain, from project origination to asset management solutions. The collaboration with the H2@Scale team will provide insights on power quality, system design, and operation for future large-scale hydrogen plants. Feasibility studies for scaling up hydrogen production and use will be conducted, with a focus on strategic planning and implementation in the Port of Houston and Gulf Coast region. The project also aims to leverage pre-existing hydrogen pipelines and industrial infrastructure to identify environmental and economic benefits of hydrogen deployment.
