Douglas Spalding, an environmental consultant and project manager from Newtonmore, has initiated the HyAmbition project with the goal of revolutionizing the energy sources at Everest Base Camp. The project focuses on introducing sustainable oxygen and hydrogen by utilizing renewable power sources, thereby eliminating the reliance on yak dung for fuel. Spalding's idea stemmed from his experience with respiratory issues during a visit to Mount Everest in 2019, which he attributed to the inhalation of pulverized yak waste used for heating and cooking along the walking trails. The HyAmbition project involves the innovative process of splitting water to co-produce hydrogen and oxygen using solar power. By implementing multi-use bottles for transporting these gases to and from the base camp, the project aims to significantly reduce environmental impact in the Khumbu region. Spalding envisions building a sustainable business model that supports the local economy, community welfare, and addresses the challenges posed by tourism on the environment and health of the community. With his background in clean energy projects and a deep-rooted passion for art and mountaineering, Spalding combines his expertise to propose a practical solution for the climate crisis in remote upland destinations. The project not only aims to enhance the environmental sustainability of Everest Base Camp but also to improve healthcare facilities and economic opportunities for the local population. By seeking suitable business partners and funding, Spalding plans to conduct a feasibility study and develop a business case to demonstrate the viability of the HyAmbition project. The ultimate goal is to establish a fully commercial enterprise that efficiently delivers sustainable oxygen and hydrogen to Mount Everest, contributing to the overall well-being of the region while reducing the reliance on fossil fuels and animal resources.
