The Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy (IIPE) in Visakhapatnam has been on a trajectory of growth and internationalization, securing 50 crore in research grants over the past year. The institute offers a unique sandwich PhD program allowing researchers to spend a year at a foreign university, along with opportunities to obtain MS degrees from the University of Houston or an MBA from IIM Visakhapatnam without requiring standardized exams. IIPE's focus on industry-sponsored projects and international collaborations has been highlighted by its director, Prof. Shalivahan. Prof. Shalivahan emphasized the institute's initiatives such as floating electives, with foreign faculty teaching international electives and industry professionals contributing to industry electives. IIPE has also organized workshops on hydrogen and global decarbonization, partnering with institutions like Stony Brook University, New York. The institute supports faculty by facilitating visits to foreign institutions and provides financial assistance for hosting foreign faculty. Prof. K. Vijaya Kumar, the dean of research and development at IIPE, highlighted the institute's industry projects, including a desalination-based hydrogen project in collaboration with NTPC. This project aims to position Visakhapatnam as a global green hydrogen hub. IIPE has also undertaken projects with organizations like Oil India Limited, NMDC, ONGC, and the directorate general of hydrocarbons (DGH), contributing significantly to the nation. In addition to research and industry collaborations, IIPE focuses on academic excellence, offering support for faculty development and facilitating student participation in international conferences. The institute's efforts reflect a positive sentiment towards hydrogen research and sustainable initiatives, positioning Visakhapatnam as a hub for cutting-edge research and educational excellence.
