India's Ambitious Plans for Green Hydrogen Production in 2025
Key Ideas
  • Government plans to issue tenders for additional green hydrogen production capacity in 2025 to expand the country's green hydrogen mission.
  • India aims to award 7.8 LTPA production capacity for green hydrogen and its derivatives, alongside releasing standards and a certification scheme.
  • Challenges such as high production costs and infrastructure limitations exist despite significant progress, supported by substantial financial aid and investments.
  • India targets becoming a leading green hydrogen producer with investments totaling $70 billion committed in the sector.
The Indian government, under the leadership of Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, is set to further its efforts in green hydrogen production in 2025. Following a successful year in 2024 where 4.12 LTPA capacity was awarded to 10 companies with a subsidy of ₹3,055 crore, plans for an additional 7.8 LTPA capacity are in place. New standards will be introduced for various aspects of green hydrogen production, storage, and transportation, with a Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme on the horizon. Despite progress, challenges such as high production costs and infrastructure limitations persist. As part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, India aims to achieve an annual production of 5 million tonnes by 2030. Notable investments of $70 billion have been attracted in the sector, with key players like Reliance Industries, Adani Enterprises, and Indian Oil Corporation committing to the cause. The focus on green hydrogen aligns with the country's vision to transition towards cleaner energy sources and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
